The Premiere of TailTalks Episode I

May 24, 2018 by Dr. Evan Goldstein

We are excited to announce the premiere of our new quarterly roundtable series, TailTalks. The idea has been over a year in the making and came about when Dr. Goldstein realized there was a lack of conversations focusing on LGBTQ+ issues that featured entrepreneurs, thought leaders, journalists, and members of the LGBTQ+ community not just from the medical world, but also from the worlds of art, fashion, entertainment, and sports.

The first discussion took place at Club Cumming in NYC and focused on PrEP and the new sexual revolution. It featured one of the pioneering leaders behind PrEP, Dr. Raphael Landovitz, as well as journalist, Brian Moylan; actor and filmmaker, Kit Williamson; and DNP & HIV specialist, Jeffrey Kwong; and led by Dr. Goldstein himself. While the conversation was fluid and touched on a handful of topics, the professional accounts and personal anecdotes focused on the social side of PrEP, slut shaming, new frontiers, and unexpected consequences. Dr. Goldstein wanted to highlight the advocacy he and each of the guests are taking on, promote sexual positivity, and remind people that everyone has the right to access quality healthcare. In this episode, Dr. Goldstein aptly points out: People in this day and age feel as if the more followers you have, the more credibility you hold and that becomes a really tough point. And this is why I started this, was to try and figure out how we as physicians and advocates for everything can really take center stage to make sure people are actually advocating the correct way and the way that’s going to be the most effective.

Dr. Goldstein’s goal in creating TailTalks is to bring together a group of peers who may not necessarily know other, in a comfortable and familiar setting, to discuss issues that not only impact their own lives, but also those around them. Topics will range throughout the series not just science and sex and his guests are guaranteed to bring an interesting and unscripted perspective to the table (pun intended). The goal is to shine light on important issues by starting the conversation and seeing where it takes us.
